Vodafone Three Merger And Benefits To UK Businesses
Vodafone Three Merger Origins
31st May 2025 was the big completion date for the merger of these 2 titans of the UK cellular marketplace. Vodafone has for 40 years held the focus of the business world, with the most commercial friendly offerings and approach to selling their cellular service in the UK. Vodafone has a long history of world firsts, with some highlights being Britain's first cellular call in 1985, the first SMS message in 1992, the first international roaming agreement in 1992 and the first holographic call in 2018. All these achievements opened the door to tools and services which UK businesses hungrily devoured in an effort to take their businesses global.
Three also has its own long list of firsts with the most significant being that Three was the UKs first commercial 3G video capable network. Three, was also the first network to meet all its regulatory requirements concerning population coverage, meeting and exceeding the UK government target of 80% of the UK population as early as 2004.
In recent years, both Vodafone and Three have developed deep relationships with the UK business community, offering in most cases a fantastic combination of bandwidth and coverage options. Having partnered with both networks over the last 15 years and deployed solutions for customers on both of these networks, we can vouch for their credibility and robust service to the UK business community.
The new joint venture VodafoneThree will see Vodafone with 51% ownership giving Three the remaining 49% stake. This new entity will certainly bring some exciting new options to the UK.
Potential Benefits To UK Businesses
The VodafoneThree business has forecast an £11 billion investment into building out its most advanced 5G network in the next 10 years with significant spend on developing and maturing its 5G SA (standalone) network. Any plans to invest in the 5G SA infrastructure of the UK will mean huge benefits to UK businesses.
There is currently fair to good 5G coverage across the UK, but there are still 2 major areas of concern. Area one is that the 5G coverage is mostly focused around a few major cities in the UK, leaving the more rural parts of the country with no 5G coverage, or very minimal coverage. The second area is that most of the 5G carrier deployments in the UK are 5G NSA (Non StandAlone) meaning that its essentially old cell towers and masts with new 5G cells attached to them.
This 5G NSA is really the cellular carrier's method of starting down the road of 5G coverage with the least amount of infrastructure spend. The fact that the carriers want to minimise their capital outlays is understandable given the constant fear of economic slump in the UK, but it’s still short sighted given the investments being made into 5G SA in other parts of the world. The commercials of the 5G deployment programmes in the UK are an interesting topic all of their own, and one to be tackled in another dedicated post.
Needless to say, we at BusinessMobileContract.com certainly welcome this potential £11 billion spent into developing and modernising the UKs cellular infrastructure.
Working with UK businesses of all sizes, one of the key issues we often come across, are the long potential lead times for deploying fiber leased lines to a customer's shiny new premises. These leased line products are typically provisioned by BT EE in the UK, and anyone that has worked with these mammoth companies will testify, sometimes you need the patience of a saint.
In these scenarios, we offer 5G cellular boosted solutions. These cellular boosted solutions involve our expert team installing donor aerials to the roof of the customers office space, capturing the best possible cellular carrier signal from one of the 4 major UK networks, and then cleaning, boosting and distributing that 5G signal around the customers premises.
These boost solutions we offer are commercial grade robust solutions, meaning that our customers are not left standing in the rain outside their new offices waiting for fiber to be installed, they can move in and know that their office is fully operational as planned. Some of our customers even decide to cancel their fiber lines, choosing to stick with the greater flexibility and potential speeds of a 5G cellular network.
We see the VodafoneThree entity as being a wonderful addition to the UK cellular network market. There will be monopoly concerns to be addressed in the coming years, but overall this combining of 5G proponents should be a wonderful thing for UK businesses.
