Sri Lanka Smarter Telecom Infrastructure
Sri Lanka Smarter Telecom
Sri Lanka’s telecoms landscape just took a big leap forward on 2 September 2025. For the first time, an independent infrastructure company, Edotco Services Lanka, part of the Edotco Group, has secured a Telecommunications Infrastructure Services Licence, marking a significant step toward the country’s move for a smarter, faster, and more cost-effective network building.
The nation can now welcome neutral-host tower companies, which specialize in creating and managing telecom infrastructure that operators can share.
Networks can be rolled out quicker and smarter while keeping costs in check.
During the award ceremony, TRCSL’s Director General, retired Air Vice Marshal Bandula Herath, stressed how the old fragmented model was slowing down progress, and now with this license, the country can position itself for more efficient, inclusive 5G growth.
Edotco: A Trusted Name in Infrastructure
Since entering Sri Lanka in 2015, the Edotco Group has introduced innovations like smart multipurpose poles that also serve as billboards, EV charging stations, and even air-quality monitors.
Regionally, Edotco is a telecom heavyweight managing over 47,000 towers across Asia and connecting more than 505 million mobile users, carrying some 28 exabytes of data annually. This new licence allows Edotco Sri Lanka to bring global experience and trusted execution to local businesses within Sri Lanka.
How Edotco Will Empower Sri Lankan Businesses
With its new licence, Edotco Sri Lanka can now give the country everything it needs to stay connected. They will build the tall towers that join cities together, the fibre lines that carry fast internet, and the small devices inside buildings that make sure offices, malls, and factories never lose signal.
For businesses, this is a big win as instead of working with many different companies, they now have one strong partner who can handle it all, from the big 5G tower outside to the small cell inside that boosts coverage. This makes network growth faster, smarter, and cheaper.
Even better, places that were left out before, like rural towns, rural markets, or factories, will now get reliable connections to grow and compete.
Meeting Big Telecom Needs—5G, High Data, and More
Experts say that Sri Lanka will need more than 7,000 new towers to support its 5G ambitions, and mobile data usage is expected to quadruple by 2028. Edotco Sri Lanka’s Managing Director, Gayan Koralage, described the licence as a "vote of confidence" in their ability to get it done. For business leaders seeking infrastructure partners, this assurance means a smoother, faster, and more resilient path forward.
A Legal Boost Behind the Change
This new era in telecom wouldn’t have been possible without legal reform. Sri Lanka’s recent Telecommunications (Amendment) Act laid the foundation for neutral-host licensing. Now, independent infrastructure providers are officially recognized and supported by law.
A Licence That Speaks Volumes
In simple terms, the licence paves the way for faster, smarter telecom infrastructure. Edotco now has the legal authority to deliver end-to-end services, from towers to fibre to small cell and indoor boosters. With huge demand for new towers and exploding data use, this is a strategic win for all businesses in the connectivity space.
The key takeaway for business users? Sri Lanka’s telecom evolution just got turbocharged, thanks to neutral-host licensing and a capable partner like Edotco.
